Keeping it in the family this Panto Day

For many, pantomime marks the start of festive celebrations, but for Sarah and Steve Boden of Imagine Theatre, it’s a year-round passion. As they celebrate their 243rd production on National Panto Day, they reflect on the theme of Family—a value at the heart of both their business and the magic of panto.

Imagine Theatre began in the late 1990s when Steve started hiring out panto sets stored in a barn. What started as a practical solution evolved into a thriving family business, with Sarah joining full-time in 2009. Today, the husband-and-wife team runs over 40 shows annually from their sparkling Coventry facility.

“Family is central to everything we do,” says Steve. “Panto is about bringing people together—kids, parents, grandparents—all enjoying the magic of theatre as one.” Sarah adds, “We’ve always wanted our shows to be accessible to everyone, creating memories that families will cherish forever.”

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of their ethos. From hosting open auditions for young performers to nurturing talent behind the scenes, Imagine is committed to fostering the next generation of panto professionals. Many who began as junior ensemble members now take leading roles—a testament to the company’s supportive culture.

While traditions like ghost gags and audience interaction remain, Imagine embraces innovation. Award-winning digital sets enhance the experience for modern audiences while retaining panto’s timeless charm.

As custodians of this beloved tradition, the Bodens are dedicated to ensuring panto continues to unite families for generations. “If we’ve made you feel six years old again, we’ve done our job,” Steve says.
