Time Travel, Textiles & Trails

Our fantastic Time Travel Trails...will be back in museums from 1 February.

Calling all Time Travellers! Come on an excellent adventure and explore our cultural venues with our free, fun family-friendly self-led trails.

As you travel through our brilliant cultural venues - Baird Institute, Burns House Museum and the Dick Institute, you'll visit different times in history. The trails will lead you on a whirlwind tour, tracking down famous local figures and creatures from the past that have shaped the incredible history of Ayrshire and influenced the present as we know it!

This time around you will unravel historic stories with the help of our new characters who have popped up to say hello!! Let them spin you a good yarn about life in the past in and around Ayrshire. These new, woolly wee wonders are knitting their wee brows together wondering... wool you find them all?!

The knitted characters are the result of an imaginative community project that brought together textile volunteers, to showcase their incredible artistry and skill. Collaborators included our own Dean Castle Textile team, Yarn A Go-Go Knitting club and Heather Dunlop, Customer Experience Assistant at the Burns Monument Centre. The highly talented volunteers have been knitting and crocheting up a storm over the past year bringing life and love into the woolly characters.

The project celebrates the many fascinating historical figures featured in East Ayrshire’s museums and collections ranging from the 18C through to the 20C. From Robert Burns and Jean Armour starring at the Burns House Museum, to Keir Hardie and the Suffragettes wowing us with their huge political impact at the Baird Institute! Find out more about James Dick and the Dick Institute’s fascinating history as a WWI Volunteer Auxiliary hospital, alongside Minerva the Roman goddess of wisdom and everyone’s favourite museum mascot Brian the Lion. You’ll discover a lot more quirky and beloved local characters along the way!
